For my third independent photo assignment, I chose to do macro. Initially, when I was going to take pictures I went outside to do Black and white for this assignment. But as I was walking around I saw two very pretty roses and decided that I wanted to take a picture of them for Macro instead, because the color on them was really nice and I didn't want to lose it. Then when I was walking I saw a moth flying around and it first stopped on a flower so I decided to take a picture of it. I followed it around for a while and then it stoped on some leafs and that picture looked really good , and it is the one I chose as my main one. So far this is my favorite set of pictures I have taken because almost all were in focus this time and I had a really nice day to shoot. This made for good pictures. I got to work with the macro settings on the camera for this assignment and I really liked how it made the pictures look in comparison to the ones I chose the settings for. Shutter Speed: 1/800 sec Aperture: f 5.6 ISO: 100
For this picture I didn't do a lot of editing only to bring out more of the details. I really lowered the highlights and added more shadows, I also made the contrast a bit lower to brighten the photo.

For our second assignment in Photoshop, we learned how to retouch our photos in order to get a better composition. We worked with several features including: cropping, the clone tool, selection tools, levels, and layers. These tools allowed us to change the before picture below into the after picture below. We removed the background to bring attention to the car and removed all the glares to perfect it. I found the tools we used very useful and I think I will be using them in a lot of upcoming assignments.
For my second independent photo assignment, I chose to do Nature. During this assignment I got to play around with my ISO for the first time. The reason I had to play around with my ISO, was because on Sunday the weather was really bad and there wasn't good sun to work with. I really struggled with the light in this assignment, a lot of my pictures ended up being grainy as a result. I think I am starting to understand how to expose my pictures better and what to play around with to get the best result, but I still think I need to work on it more. Below is what I think was my best picture from my nature shoot. I think that it could be a lot better if I chose a better day to shoot, but I think its a good picture for a beginner. Aperture: f 3.5 Shutter Speed: 1/60 sec ISO: 200
For this picture I decided to make it a little brighter, since it was a bit too dark. Then I made the colors and details pop with vibrance and saturation. For our first assignment in photoshop we created popup photos. We took portraits and got to give them really cool effects and then we changed the colors, by changing the hue/saturation. For the first one below there is the one that was the requirement for this assignment. Then there is one that I got to do on my own and play around with the colors. This assignment was a good introduction to Photoshop, because it gave us a chance to play around with the different features on Photoshop. We especially got the chance to play around on the second one, since we could do what we wanted. This can help us to understand how to use Photoshop in the future on other pictures. Photoshop allows you to make your pictures better by editing them and giving them nice effects that in-turn provide better composition in the final product. This assignment's objectives were to work with filters, guides, resizing the canvas, threshold dialog, and moving a layer. I really felt that the objectives we're met and I now have a good basic understanding of photoshop.
For the first independent photo assignment, I chose to do people. I decided to take pictures of my friend outside my house and in the woods next to my house. During this assignment I learned a lot and ran into several problems which affected the quality of my final product. It was sunny outside while taking pictures, so I couldn't really see how the pictures were looking on my camera and a lot of them were out of focus. I took around 105 photos and I was barely able to get the 10 best pictures. Another thing that didn't help the quality, was the fact that my camera lens was dirty and the smudges on it gave all my pictures a hazy effect. Below, I have my best picture, although it isn't perfect quality-wise, I really liked how it looked and with a few more tries I think it could be the best. Shutter: 1/100 Aperture: f 4.5 ISO: 160
This picture was too light originally, so I darkened it with more blacks and shadows. I also lowered the exposure. Finally, I added saturation and vibrance. The following pictures are for inspiration on the different topics for the first digital photography assignment. I want to do pictures of people Photo #1 For my first example I have a picture of a girl with flowers in front of her. I like this picture because the flowers are framing her face and bringing attention to the subject. I also like how the floors are not in focus to emphasize how focused it is on her face. Photo #2 For my second example I have a picture in black and white with a person looking out at the city backdrop. I like how dramatic it looks from the black and white. I also like the story it tells even though you cant see their face. Photo #3 For my final example, I choose a picture of baby.. This picture is really nice because it shows the beautiful fall backdrop while still keeping the focus on the subject. I really like this picture and I like the colors that are in it and how they give of a very fall look. For this first assignment in this class, we learned about several different composition techniques to take better pictures. We learned about rule of thirds, pattern, symmetry, texture, depth field, lines, framing, perspective, space, balance, and color. Below are an example of each. We had to take eleven pictures, one picture for each technique. Although there is a different picture for each technique, one picture can contain several of these in it. As photographers we must know how to use these techniques when approaching something you want to take a photo of. These will help us for future assignments that are going to be more complicated, together a really nice result. I learned a lot about composition and photography in general from this assignment. This assignment made me think more critically when approaching something. It also forced me to look for random things I can take a photo of to use one of the techniques. I learned a lot about the power of photography, because somehow an ordinary thing in real life that may not look that pretty, can look beautiful once you've come up close and taken a picture of it.
